Starting strong in February

It’s 5:59 am. It’s Groundhog Day and National Wear Red Day aka Heart Health Day for Women. We’re supposed to wear red and post all sorts of numbers like blood pressure and cholesterol.

Well, I have yet to wash my only red sweater that I wear in December for podcasting, and my blood sometimes boils. I don’t like red. I prefer the earth colors. My cholesterol should be good because I deprive myself of steaks, eggs and cheese on regular basis. I don’t eat pasta because of A1C, but I know it’s under 7, and I don’t take Trulicity or Ozempic. I eat plenty of broccoli and salads even in winter.

I walked to the gauges by our French door this morning. The temperature outside was exactly zero. Yesterday, I finally got out, and it was like walking into an ice cube, after breaking the door in the garage open. Everything was frozen to the bone. The only thing warm at the Hong Kong Buffet were the koi fish swimming in the lovely pool. So, I threw them a penny that I didn’t have in my pocket and had to borrow from my husband.

After streamlining my podcast show “For the Love of Books Podcast,” the stats are booming, the episodes are exploding with fun, and laughter is ringing in my writing studio. I love my colleague fellow authors who are my featured guests on the weekly podcast show because I have a passion for the indie writing business. We put our hearts into what we do best on daily basis with its ups and downs.

I’ve been privileged to meet some of the amazing authors in person at festivals and art shows. And that season is coming up starting in February with the Women’s Expo in Lansing.

Check this out. We had a lot of fun discussing my new book “Greenwich Meridian Memoir” with filmmakers Larry Sands and Erick Kaslov on the “Something Something creative podcast” show. I started working on the screenplay based on the memoir. I am done storyboarding Act One that I started on Nov. 30. I modified Blake Snyder’s style to fit my own using big poster boards for each act.

About the storyboard; Each index card represents a scene which equals one minute in the movie and one page in the script. The beat sheet includes the following scenes: opening image, theme stated, set-up, catalyst, debate and break into Act Two.

Today, I was setting up the storyboard for Act Two.

I introduced the main characters in the first 10 minutes or on the 10 pages of the script.

A dream come true for Hastings woman

Grand Rapids, MI- Maranda Palova chatted about her business “Little Dreamers Sleepovers” with Fox 17 Morning Mix co-host LeighAnn Towne on Tuesday morning.

Inspired by her French niece Ella’s request for a sleepover at her Hastings home, Palova designed a kids’ birthday party line.

“My daughter Josephine and Ella enjoyed it so much that I thought why not let everyone enjoy a sleepover party,” said Palova.

The path from idea to the final product- a themed tent set-up- at clients’ home entailed a mix of hard work, innovation spiced with passion and creativity.

“I love kids,” said Palova. “It’s very rewarding. “

The most popular themes include: Unicorns, mermaids and minecraft.

Palova comes to a client’s home two hours or earlier before the party to set up the sleepover scene complete with tents and all the party bells and whistles.

The next morning she tears down the tents leaving behind only precious memories.

“It’s coming of age thing,” Palova said. “It’s heart warming. “

Palova loves changing the colors in different themes. She encourages early bookings. Her coverage area is within 60 miles radius of Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo or Hastings.

Neil Simon’s classic rocks the Lowell audience

Lowell, MI- Neil Simon’s dinner theater-Rumors at Larkin’s Other Place is a step back in time into a distant possibility of imagination gone wild.

Presented by the LowellArts Players, the play is fast-paced with characters emerging on stage one after another.

First guests who arrive to the 10th anniversary party find out that one of the hosts attempted suicide-unsuccessfully.

What ensues are hilarious cover-ups and deceptions, lies and twisted truths.

Although funny and ludicrous, one expects that the main characters Charley and Myra will appear on stage anytime.

The four affluent couples know each well from other social gatherings. And are quite critical of each other.

When the officers arrive, someone has to play Charley to cover-up for gun shots.

Who will it be?

The play, which is actually a farce, is directed by Kim Miller. The beautiful set was designed by Ron Wood and Dan Kantorowski. Costumes were designed by Marcia DeVos. Peggy Parrish was in charge of stage management and sound.

“Last year, Tony N’ Tina’s Wedding chronicled the ‘wedding from hell,” Miller said. “This year with Rumors, we are putting on the 10th wedding anniversary ‘party from hell.”

The show dates and times are: April 28 at 2:30 pm, May 3, 4 & 5 with dinner at 6:30 pm and show at 7:30 pm.

The tickets are $16 – $20, dinner is an additional $13. Advanced tickets required for dinner theater, show only tickets also available.

The food, walnut crusted chicken with cherry sauce, by Deb Apol was delicious. The venue provided by Mike Larkin was fabulous and timeless.

The play was very Authentic. Thank you Neil Simon for your imagination.

Simon said, “This is completely different for me..It’s unlike anything else I’ve ever written. It’s my first farce.”

Here is a link to my author interview at LowellArts on April 7, 2018.

The reason I picked this venue is because of their recent move to Main Street. The new location on Main has been a dream come true for LowellArts much like my new book “Shifting Sands Short Stories” has been for me.

Main Street is the major source of inspiration for the lead story “Tonight on Main” in my new book “Shifting Sands Short Stories.” It is also featured in my Shifting Sands: Secrets book II. (c) 2018 Emma Palova

The interview followed a short video “From Idea to Final.” I am currently editing the video about the creative process from the initial spark through incubation to the final product, whether it is a book, a play, a screenplay, video production or a film.

I will also post a transcript to both videos. I wrote the script on celtx script app. It’s easy to use; perfect for pre-production.

April, poetry month inspirations

I ‘ve been getting in my inbox selected poetry from the Knopf Doubleday Publishing.

I chose to do that, once I found out that April showers not only bring May flowers, but also some of the best poems. So, I get a poem-a-day.

Today, “Louie Lies” poem by Philip Levine arrived.

I was so enchanted by it, that I bought the book “The Last Shift.”

Now, poetry has always inspired me; everything from French poet Charles Baudelaire, Czech poet Jiri Wolker, American poet Stanley Kunitz to my Rumanian friend Valeriu Dg Barbu.

And now this delight by Levine came just in time to further inspire my writing video shoot tomorrow @LowellArts.

I am finalizing the script for the video today. I want to have it on hand when I talk about my writings at various events.

Whenever I explain the creative process from idea to final product; whether a book, a screenplay, video or movie, I start with the empty room analogy.

This originates in Picasso’s: “Give me a museum, and I will fill it.”

You need a Faceless room to put a face to it.

I will post a link to it once we’re done. I am really excited about the video. Screen and playwrighting are my second love.

I wrote a full-feature film screenplay “Riddleyville Clowns” @emmapalova in 2009 that I am looking to produce.

I ‘ve also been following my Indian friend and moviemaker Ashray Dravidian on his film making journey with his latest short film “Nirvana.”
