30 day blogging challenge

30 day blogging challenge

Day 1 Nov. 17, 2015

Okay, I took up this 30-day blogging challenge because I constantly have to prove things to myself and to others. This will be my 300th post since I started blogging in January of 2013 to promote my memoir Greenwich Meridian on the WordPress platform. The blog’s name is EW Emma’s Writings.

Amaryllis
Amaryllis

I am halfway through the book about our family immigration saga. I’ve written about everything from last year’s eye ordeal with cataracts to blogging, and to Earth Day.

After years of writing for both print and digital media, I feel like I am running out of ideas.

In August, I took on a client blog Fallasburg Today @fallasburg and I will have another one @ lmason2016, a political campaign.

I did everything according to Learn to Blog guidelines including E-newsletters. I designed my first one on a cell phone on mail chimp.

Now, my husband wants me to go back to work to do whatever. I’ve already done whatever from working for Women’s Department for a Midwest chain Meijer to a bunch of newspapers and magazines.

I’ve had front page stories published and I’ve received several awards. But, what really bothers me is that I haven’t been able to get my fiction published. I’ve written a collection of short stories “Glass Flowers,” a screenplay “Riddleyville Clowns,” a book “Fire on Water” and I am working on the memoir.

I hope this challenge helps me regroup my thoughts and focus again. This is my plan for the challenge:

  • Innovation
  • Getting rid of old thoughts and behavior patterns
  • Focusing on humanity
  • Getting back to the memoir
  • Developing regular writing times

I bet anyone can attest that both have their advantages and disadvantages. So, feel free to write about your take on where you live and why. It will be hilarious.

Writer’s Digest competition

Writer’s Digest competition deadline is coming up

By Emma Palova

EW Emma’s Writings

Lowell, MI -June 5th is the deadline for the major annual Writer’s Digest contest. I am entering this year with the following pieces in two different categories. The first one is non-fiction article that deeply touched me, “Hiker Babe walks in memory of daughter.”

This article is about a woman whom I have known for a long time. Her name is Gail Lowe. Lowe is a retired nurse, who has hiked the Appalachian Trail twice and most recently the North Country Trail in memory of her daughter Becka.

Becka's Hike
Mission accomplished

Lowe’s only fear remains that she won’t be able to hike anymore because of aging. Becka’s fear before she passed from breast cancer was not to be forgotten. So, her mother immortalized her with the 4,600-mile long hike through seven Midwest states. She got sick on the trail and turned 65.

The second piece I am submitting is fiction based in reality, “Twice into the same river.”

There is a saying that you cannot step twice into the same river, meaning that everything flows with time.

Well, I have. First, in the late eighties when I took care of my grandparents until their death. Then, I left Czech Republic for the USA.

Brother and sister in Reed City, a theme for a short story.

Now, I am facing the same destiny with my brother who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. He can and cannot take care of himself. He refuses to take medication and is very angry most of the time.

I fear that I am not going to be able to handle him. The unknown ahead is so overwhelming that’s why I am writing about it to ease the burden.

I will be stepping twice into the same river, only some 25 years later.

Social media blitz

Get connected, be social

By Emma Palova

Lowell, MI- I decided to contribute to the Blogging 201 discussion Day 6 on social media. I am sharing my experience with the much coveted social media.

There are three or more social media distinctions on the WordPress platform.

Number one: sharing buttons or white boxes either in your settings, you drag which services you want. Or on your dashboard in the Publish section on the right, you see Publicize and you click on edit. Add the ones you want. Then of course you want the public to use the sharing buttons as well.

Number two: The much coveted facebook like widget that can go into almost any sidebar. However, the facebook like widget works only with facebook pages, not with personal fb.

So, you first create a facebook page, if you don’t have one. Then copy its URL into the facebook page like widget. Make sure you save. It takes a few minutes. Then, your post on facebook will show in the fb widget on your blog, along with heads of the people who like your page.

The same goes for Instagram except that your photos will show.

Number three: Social media icons. Best placement on top in the upper right hand corner or in the footer. You can find them on the Internet, copy their code and paste into your text widget or you can also find them in the support section of WordPress titled Social Tools. Again copy and paste into the widget text box, and save.

Don’t forget to connect them to your social profiles like Twitter, facebook, LinkedIn and/or Google +.

That means replace the text in the brackets with your let’s say Twitter URL.

However, all this is pointless unless you’re working both your blog and your facebook page. That means regular posts with photographs, logos, polls, events and such.

Happy connecting.

Feel free to e-mail me with questions.

Emma
